The machine on the left is a Foot Tradle Stapler which is for closing empty cartons. These machines use large copper staples, most common is the 32 series with the 15mm leg. Once you have closed the bottom of the carton and filled it, you can use a Top Stapler - pictured on the right, to close the top. These are both avilable as either manual or pnuematic.
